Physics Olympics
CMPO is an annual event where students from local high schools
participate in six events that challenge their physics and engineering
skills. This event began in 1993 and has seen significant growth
over the years. Recent competitions included students from Anne
Arundel, Baltimore, Calvert, Carroll, Frederick, Howard, Montgomery,
Prince George's, and Washington counties and Baltimore City.

The theme of this year's event was "The
Greatest Hits of the Past Fifteen Years!" Here's a listing
of the events with the intended goal for each: |
| 1. |
"Free Falling" -- build the least massive device
to safely deliver a package dropped from a height of 4 meters. |
| 2. |
"Turkey in the Straw" -- build a device from McDonald's
straws to lift an egg over a barrier and safely move the egg
the greatest horizontal distance. |
| 3. |
"Rocket Man" -- transport the greatest mass the
furthest along a line of fishing wire. The wire will be set
up so that the starting position is 50 cm below the other end
of the line. |
| 4. |
"I Walk the Line" -- set boards and cinder blocks
balancing the weight so one team member can walk the plank. |
| 5. |
"Hit Me With Your Best Shot" -- build a projectile
device from materials provided to fire an object with the greatest
reliability. |
| 6. |
"Bridge Over Troubled Water" -- build a bridge to
span 20 cm of open space and support the maximum number of marbles. |
